The Basin and The Towel
In a culture of texts, emails, and instant messaging that threatens to isolate us even as we stand next to each other, it is more important than ever for us to consider what it means to pick up the basin and the towel.
Scripture relates that as they sat in the Upper Room, Jesus' disciples bickered over who amongst them would be the greatest. Yet despite His impending death and the knowledge He was about to be betrayed and forsaken, Jesus arose, took up the basin and towel, and quietly went about washing their feet, telling them "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."
That example was not just for the disciples' sake, but ours as well. As deacons, part of our role is to help the church meet the needs of the congregation as well as the people served by the ministries of Highland Hills as outlined on this page. In short, we are to be the "hands and feet" of Christ.
God never intended for His children to suffer through difficult times alone, so if you find yourself in need of assistance, please allow us to help. It's what families do – we help each other.
But the job is not ours alone. Perhaps you're in a position to be able to offer assistance as well. If so, we invite every believer to join us to pick up the basin and the towel and follow the lead of the greatest service provider of all in order to honor His command to "wash the feet" of others.
Regardless of your circumstances, as your deacon body, we would like to know, how may we serve you?
Benevolence
The goal of the Benevolence Ministry is to help our brothers and sisters in Christ by providing emotional, physical, and/or financial support during their time of need. Visit the Benevolence page to learn more.
Church Family Support
Whether it's due to the birth of a baby, an unexpected hospitalization, or a death in the family, we all need a little extra help and encouragement from time to time. That's why our Family Support Ministry is designed to provide assistance with things like prepared meals, prayer support, and friendly visits during life's "ups and downs".
Please let us know how we can offer help and support to you or someone you know through life's seasons of joy and sorrow.
Servanthood Evangelism
Jesus washed the feet of His own disciples, but that doesn't mean that His love was intended to stop at the door of the church! As we are reminded in the book of James, faith, without action, is useless. To that end, we encourage every member of our body to be involved in some aspect of service to others.
Now, before you get discouraged because you think the only way to do this is to go on an overseas mission trip, rest assured there are many ways you can share God's love that don't require a passport. For example, you could volunteer to help with the Isaiah Project, a ministry partner that reaches out to those in need in neighboring communities. Or perhaps you would be interested in our nursing home outreach to show God's love to those who are unable to live without assistance by visiting and providing something as simple as a box of tissues. Or maybe you would like to board the A.R.K. with us in order to share Acts of Random Kindness around our communities. (Get it?) What will that look like? It depends. It may be a bottle of water on a hot day or "random raking" in the fall. Regardless of the event, it will be done with the goal of demonstrating God's love in both big and small ways.
Perhaps you have another idea on how to serve but you're not sure how to proceed. Let us know. We would love to help.
